AI analytics, secure streaming, CDN leeching and hybrid cloud services are among the main talking points at this year’s event for carrier-grade CDN software provider Velocix, which also announced a collaboration with Verimatrix to address content piracy issues.
Jim Brickmeier, CEO of Velocix, noted that while operators are “focused on security for streaming and concerns about stream theft”, it’s not always easy to work out where the theft of content is taking place in the network.
“The goal for operators is not just to detect and stop that from happening, but actually to convert some of those illegitimate users into legitimate subscribers,” he commented.
CDN leeching, where unauthorised users consume content directly from the network without paying for it, is a critical and costly challenge for video service providers.
The joint initiative between Velocix and Verimatrix aims to provide streaming providers with the means to detect, deny, and prevent unsanctioned usage of CDN capacity by third parties.
In terms of the wider themes at IBC, Brickmeier cited the ongoing focus on operational efficiency and improving how services can be monetised. Velocix itself provides an AI analytics tool to help customers to manage their operations and use the data embedded in their systems more effectively.
He noted that agentic AI has certainly been a major buzzword this year, although he questions whether or not the term is always being correctly applied.
“You see a lot of AI on everybody’s booths. Everybody knows that it’s here. To some degree, the question is, what’s required?… We’re trying to be pragmatic about the conversation.”
Brickmeier also said Velocix has seen a lot of interest from operators in hybrid cloud, to provide them with greater flexibility when managing event-based traffic, for example.
