BBC NI transitions to IP with new OB

BBC Northern Ireland’s first IP-based OB truck was “a uniquely challenging project,” according to Jon Flay, MD of systems integrator Megahertz. “It wasn’t an existing solution. We had to work very closely with Sony, Nevion and BBC engineers to deliver the project.”

Not only is ST 2110 still new, and it was difficult to get all the control systems to work together, but long lead times made the full configuration and integration more difficult.

Flay: New IP-based OB “needs to be able to do everything”

The double-expanded truck is designed so it can be used as an additional studio gallery, for when all the other galleries are in use, so it is not just a standalone sports OB and needs to work well with existing SDI infrastructure. “It needs to be able to do everything,” he explained, with users able to control it from the facility if necessary.

The truck is built around Sony’s Networked Live, with hybrid on-premises and cloud capabilities. The media network is a fully redundant spine-leaf configuration and software-defined network, based on ST 2110, under the control of Nevion’s VideoIPath, including a combination of custom-made drivers and NMOS interfaces.
