Limitations of C2PA in privacy-sensitive applications

Tech Papers 2025: This paper examines specific use cases where content authenticity is integrated into media workflows and analyses the risks of attacks and private information leakage.

Abstract

To address misinformation, content credentials provide cryptographically enhanced media annotations that ensure robust authenticity and provenance. Despite their benefits, the privacy implications of these credentials are not fully understood. This paper examines specific use cases where content authenticity is integrated into media workflows and analyses the risks of attacks and private information leakage. It emphasizes the necessity of striking a careful balance between maintaining the provenance of genuine media content and ensuring the privacy of journalists, newsrooms, and consumers. By highlighting these issues, the paper seeks to increase awareness within the news and media industry underscoring the importance of implementing additional privacy and security measures to protect individuals involved in the news process from potential harm.
