The 10th Annual Video Developer Report from Bitmovin has highlighted a shift in streaming economics, with ad-funded video emerging as a stronger monetisation engine as advertising gains ground against subscription models.

Cambio: ‘try to understand the themes where the industry is going’ Bitmovin

According to the survey of video developers and streaming providers, AVOD now leads at 69%, while FAST closed the gap on SVOD in two survey cycles. FAST now ties with traditional SVOD at 54%.

The report, unveiled at IBC2026, identifies four key areas shaping the industry: advertising and monetisation, AI, video codecs, and the quality of the viewing experience.

Roberta Cambio, Director of Product Marketing, Bitmovin, said: “The focus here was to try to understand the themes where the industry is going.”

Advertising is a particular area of change, with streaming services increasingly offering lower-cost subscription tiers supported by ads. Cambio pointed to the growth of platforms such as YouTube alongside ad-supported tiers from major streaming services.

On the topic of AI, Cambio said it should be judged by what it delivers, rather than focussing on the technology itself. “We should not talk personally about AI, but talk about what we do with it,” she remarked.
