IBC’s Mark Smith was joined by Amy Rajaonson (France Télévisions), Giulio Stante (RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana), Ronan Poullaouec (Haivision) and Sam Yoffe (Neutral Wireless) to discuss the ambitious project of deploying private 5G networks across land, sea, and air.
The project aimed to push the boundaries of innovation in private 5G, involving numerous broadcasters, production houses, and technology experts. Initial projects included remote land production and a sailing event, which demonstrated the potential for storytelling and engaging content. The primary objectives were to enhance content creation, reduce production costs, and minimise environmental impact.
The panel discussed the challenges faced in deploying private 5G networks, particularly in terms of spectrum regulation and technical integration. The first proof of concept (POC) involved deploying 5G on drones in Italy, which faced challenges such as weight restrictions and power supply issues but ultimately succeeded in capturing high-quality video. The second POC at the Henley Music Festival in the UK tested smaller devices for content capture and distribution, demonstrating the ability to create engaging festival footage using smartphones connected to a private 5G network.
