Sony has significantly updated its popular P50 box camera to make it more flexible, adaptable and better suited to IP-based production.
Shotaro Kosuge, Design Team Leader, said: “The original P50 only had SDI, but to satisfy various requirements for integration, the HDC-P50A also supports SMPTE ST 2110 IP transmission from the camera body. It can also be connected to a camera control unit, which gives it high-speed capability up to 8x for 1080p and 4x for 4K. Instead of the CCU, the 50A can also use Sony’s IP adaptor (HDCE-TX50), which allows it to output IP ST 2110 with JPEG XS compression.”

The lightweight P50A also supports IP Tally, making it ideal for use as a compact camera in IP-based studios.
It has a 2/3-inch 3-chip 4K image sensor with a globalshutter (matching Sony’s HDC-3500 and HDC-5500 cameras) and can include a variable ND filter unit (HKC-VND50). It is ideal for hard-to-reach locations, aerial shots from helicopters, or for use with cranes and wire cams. When used with the CCUs or IP extension adapter, it benefits from long-distance connections (up to 10km using single-mode fibre), for use in locations remote from the relay vehicle system, such as golf.
