EBU and Nvidia expand sovereign AI partnership

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Nvidia are expanding the sovereign standards partnership they announced last year for European public service media.

The initiative involves sovereign cloud providers, open model developers, and systems integrators working to help broadcasters deploy AI agents that allow them to keep control of their data, infrastructure, models, and security.

The public service media alliance EBU has over 115 member organisations in more than 55 countries.

As AI agents are integrated into newsrooms, production, and audience services, the deal comes at a time when broadcasters are seeking new ways to maintain editorial independence, data sovereignty, and national resilience.

The expanded initiative will define requirements and reference architectures for where workloads run, how data is governed, which models power services, and how systems stay secure throughout their lifecycle.

Annsofi Eriksson, Chief Technology Officer, EBU, said: “These standards give EBU members a shared foundation to strengthen resilience, retain control, and deliver accountable advanced services that sustain audience trust”.

Cloud providers will map the standards to sovereign deployment options. Microsoft will bring expertise from Microsoft Sovereign Cloud, including Azure Local and Foundry Local, so broadcasters can process sensitive editorial material locally and keep critical services running when external connectivity is down.

Nebius will offer a platform for broadcasters to train, fine-tune, and run their own models on European infrastructure.

Open models give broadcasters the visibility to inspect, evaluate, and adapt AI for local languages, archives, and editorial policies.

Nvidia said its Nemotron open models provide a foundation that broadcasters can customise for domain-specific applications and public-service requirements.

Delphine Ernotte, CEO, France Télévisions, President, EBU, added: “Sovereign cloud infrastructure and open models can help Europe’s public service media innovate while protecting data, editorial independence, and cultural diversity.”
