Netflix in talks with Spotify about live music events

Netflix has held reportedly talks with Spotify about collaborating on music-focused live events projects as both streaming platforms seek new offerings to drive growth.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix and Spotify had discussed partnering on events such as a music awards show or a live concert series.

The Wall Street Journal said the platform is particularly focused on music, with a new show, Building the Band, set to debut this week and another music competition in the works.

The reported talks with Spotify reflect Netflix’s growing focus on live programming and expanding its content offer to include more non-scripted TV.

Netflix is also working on a pilot with the Daily Beast, focusing on quick-turnaround, buzzy nonpolitical news events.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Jeff Gaspin, who greenlit The Voice at NBCUniversal, is spearheading Netflix’s effort to find a new music competition show and expand unscripted content. Gaspin joined Netflix last year.

Netflix has been steadily expanding its live offer, broadcasting events such as the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul boxing match and major NFL games on Christmas Day last year. It also streams WWE Raw live.

For Spotify, a potential partnership with Netflix comes as it experiments with video content. It initially announced the launch of music videos in beta in March 2025, offering the service in 11 countries including the UK, Germany and Italy.
