Vampire horror Sinners has set a new record for the most Oscar nominations received by a single film.
The movie, directed by Ryan Coogler, was nominated in 16 categories, including Best Film and Best Director. It was also put forward for stars Michael B Jordan and co-stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. Further, its cinematographer, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, became the fourth woman to be nominated in the category in Oscar’s history.
The film beat the previous record of 14 nominations, shared by All about Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016)
Following closely behind, thriller One Battle After Another is up for 13 awards, including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson.
Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix horror adaptation Frankenstein is up for nine awards, including Best Picture and one nomination for supporting actor Jacob Elordi. It has also garnered nods for the awards in cinematography, production design, and sound.
Josh Safdie’s table tennis drama was nominated for nine Oscars as well, including Best Film, Directing, and Cinematography, and Best Lead Actor for Timothee Chalamet.
Likewise, Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value was also nominated nine times. The foreign language film not only made the Best Picture shortlist but also secured nods for Actor Stellan Skarsgard, Actress Renate Reinsve, and Director Joachim Trier.
UK production Hamnet, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s book about Shakespeare and his wife, was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Actress for Jessie Buckley and Best Director for Chloe Zhao.
Other notable nominations include a Best Sound nod for Spanish drama Sirat. Amanda Villavieja, Laia Casanovas, and Yasmina Praderas are the first all-women sound team (production sound mixing, supervising sound editing, and rerecording mixing) to be nominated for a sound award.
Charmaine Chan was the sixth woman to be nominated in the visual effects category for her work on Jurassic World Rebirth.
