Comcast NBCUniversal has committed to invest over £5bn in its planned theme park in the UK during its expected five years of construction, with a further £1bn planned over its first 10 years.
Based near Bedford, Universal’s first European theme park will be called The Universal United Kingdom Resort. With enabling works on the site now in progress, construction is projected to start in 2026. When opened in 2031, Comcast NBCUniversal expects the attraction’s immersive storytelling, attractions, and hospitality to draw 8.5 million visitors a year. The company also has ambitions for it to become Europe's most-visited theme park.
Likewise, Universal expects the site to generate nearly £50bn of economic benefit for the UK economy by 2055. Indeed, the company’s concurrent investment in Universal Epic Universe in Florida has stimulated $11bn in economic impact nationwide and generated tens of thousands of jobs across the US.
The 476-acre parcel of land, purchased by Comcast in 2023, is within two hours travel time of more than 80% of England’s population and half of the UK population. Nevertheless, to help the park operate successfully, the UK government will invest £1.3bn in regional and local infrastructure, including improved transport links.
The government estimates the development will create 28,000 jobs during construction, including in the creative, technology, hospitality, and construction sectors. Over 100 people in the UK have been employed to work on the project, with Universal receiving expressions of interest from over 33,000 individuals. Approximately 80% of employees at the theme park and resort are expected to come from Bedfordshire and the surrounding regions.

The value of the UK screen industry increased by 5.4% to £13.3bn in 2025, with streaming more than compensating for the decline in traditional pay TV value, according to DEGI research. Cinema is also reportedly continuing to grow back to its pre-pandemic levels. Discover more here.
